Somaliland has a population of about 3.5 million people. Most local residents belong to the Somali ethnicity, the country's largest demographic group.
Fifty-five percent of the population is either nomadic or semi-nomadic, while 45% live in urban centers or rural towns, which include the capital city Hargeisa and Burao, Borama, Berbera, Erigabo and Las Anod. The main religion practiced is Islam – Sunni.

Tourism in Somaliland is a burgeoning industry, with visitors coming to the country to visit such sites as Laas Geel, a complex of caves containing some of the earliest known rock art in the region, and the bustling markets in the capital of Hargeisa. Sarovar Hotels and Resorts recently unveiled plans to open a hotel in Somaliland, citing the country’s growing economy and the Port of Berbera’s emergence as a trade and export hub for East Africa.
